20 Questions Before Starting a Blockchain Project

Most blockchain projects fail because of decisions made in the first week — wrong chain, wrong architecture, blockchain where a database was better. Work through this checklist before writing any code.

If you cannot answer most of these questions, the first step is a strategy call — not development.

1

Have you defined what problem blockchain specifically solves that a database cannot?

2

Do you need multiple parties to maintain the record, or just one?

3

Is trust between participants genuinely a problem in your use case?

4

Have you mapped all the data that needs to be on-chain vs. off-chain?

5

Have you chosen between public blockchain and permissioned blockchain — and can you justify the choice?

6

If public blockchain: have you modeled the gas cost at your expected transaction volume?

7

If enterprise blockchain: have you identified all participating organizations and their governance requirements?

8

Have you designed the token economics (if there is a token) — supply, distribution, vesting, utility?

9

Have you mapped all smart contract interactions and identified the security surface?

10

Have you identified which oracle provider you will use for off-chain data (if any)?

11

Have you designed the upgrade path for contracts — or accepted that they will be immutable?

12

Have you planned a third-party security audit before mainnet deployment?

13

Have you designed the frontend data architecture — RPC calls, subgraph, or a combination?

14

Do you have a wallet integration plan — which wallets will you support?

15

Have you designed the incident response process — what happens if a vulnerability is found post-launch?

16

Have you modeled the validator/node economics for a custom chain — who runs nodes and why?

17

Have you created a legal structure appropriate for your jurisdiction and token type?

18

Do you have an internal technical lead who can evaluate the blockchain engineering work?

19

Have you defined the minimum viable product scope — what can be cut and what cannot?

20

Have you spoken to potential users and validated that blockchain is the right infrastructure for their actual problem?
